Mobility Data Space
Mobility Data Space: Data sovereignty for the smart mobility of the future
The Mobility Data Space (MDS) is a data marketplace where equal partners from the mobility sector can exchange data. The data provider remains the owner of the data at all times and can autonomously decide whether and with which member to enter into data exchange. The goal is to create a cross-company data economy in order to realise and further develop innovative, environmentally and user-friendly mobility concepts. In doing so, the MDS brings together companies, organisations and institutions: those that want to monetise their data treasures and those that need data for innovative mobility solutions, but in many cases also to create a win-win situation for mutual benefit through a targeted exchange. For this purpose, the MDS creates the framework for a trusting cooperation.
The Mobility Data Space’s operator – DRM Datenraum Mobilität GmbH – is a company without the intention of making a profit. It grew out of a project initiated by the acatech Foundation and is funded by the German federal government.

MDS Offer
Data exchange, expertise and a diverse community:
this is how members benefit
Matchmaking & Networking
MDS Members have the opportunity to attend events, connect with others, and initiate new collaborations. This includes regular event formats such as “MDS Connect” (Afterwork Format) and the annual “MDS Community Event”.
Expert Knowledge
The MDS brings together experts from across the mobility sector. Through networking meetings and info sessions on key industry topics, we create space for knowledge exchange, collaboration, and new ideas.
Practical services
The MDS provides its members with hands-on support – for example, through a sample contract for data sharing or a practical guide to secure and GDPR-compliant data anonymisation. Interested in our services? Contact us at community@mobility-dataspace.eu!
MDS Portal
The MDS Portal is your one-stop shop for accessing the Mobility Data Space. Members can explore datasets via the data catalogue, request access through CaaS by agreement, stay up to date with news and events, and access support.
Connector-as-a-Service (CaaS)
CaaS is a service available to members upon request. It allows the MDS Connector for data exchange to be used directly via the MDS Portal as a Software-as-a-Service – without the need to install it within your own IT infrastructure.

Data Spaces
Definition and objectives of data spaces in Europe
Data spaces are flexible and open IT infrastructures that enable trustful and transparent use of decentrally organised data according to previously defined scopes of use while guaranteeing the full sovereignty of the actors involved. They are based on a federal organisational principle.
Data spaces create equal framework conditions for the sovereign exchange of data. This also means that every actor can benefit from the use of the data in the same way.
The MDS is a pioneering data space in Europe for the mobility sector. Thanks to its technical architecture, the MDS guarantees not only transparent and secure data exchange, but also international interoperability with other data spaces.
Objectives
Value creation
New data-based applications, business models and collaboration.
Self-determination
Control over the subject matter, scope, duration and actors in the context of data sharing.
Efficiency
Data exchange takes place exclusively for a specific purpose.
Features
Decentralisation
Centralised structures are avoided in favour of decentralised solutions.
Federation and interoperability
Interaction of actors within a data space as well as across data space is promoted.
Sovereignty
Control over one's own data and its use is always guaranteed.
Trust
Technologies, control mechanisms and unique digital identities contribute to building trust. High data quality also promotes trust.
Transparency
Digital identities and the traceability of data-based operations promote transparency.

Cooperation with other Data Spaces
The Mobility Data Space (MDS) is not only experienced when it comes to mobility topics but also one of the forerunners when it comes to operational data spaces. As a result, the MDS is an Associated Partner (AP) of the deployEMDS project. The project, which is co-funded by the EU, aims at enabling data sharing and reuse, contributing to the realisation of the EU’s common European Mobility Data Space. Building on the results of the preparatory action PrepDSpace4Mobility, deployEMDS will deploy an operational data space alongside common governance mechanisms.
The MDS with its extensive practical experience in the area of the ‘Governance of Data Spaces’ is particularly active as an Associated Partner in deployEMDS’s Work Package 3 ‘Governance’. Furthermore, MDS is active in sharing its best practices and experiences with the deployEMDS partners as well as doing Live Demos of MDS’s platform and functionalities.
